How to choose a freestyle scooter for a child or beginner

21. October

Written by Martin Nogol, Scootshop.cz · Updated on the 14th. 10. 2026

⚡ In short: choose based on your child’s height, not their age.

The handlebars should reach the child between the navel and the waist. If you’re between two sizes, choose the larger one. A reasonably priced beginner freestyle scooter costs CZK 2,000–3,000 for younger beginners and CZK 2,500–4,000 for older beginners. For under CZK 2,000, you’re buying a toy that won’t withstand jumps.

A freestyle scooter cannot be folded or adjusted in height, has small, hard wheels, and is built for jumps.

📏 Height, not age

Two ten-year-old children can be 130 and 150 cm tall. The rider’s height is decisive.

🎯 Navel to waist

The handlebars should reach this height when the child is standing on the deck.

👶 From what age

No limit. As soon as the child feels ready, usually at 5–8 years old.

💰 CZK 2,000–4,000

The range where a proper scooter for beginners begins.

🚫 Cannot be folded

Nor can it be set vertically. A secure connection is what keeps it in place on impact.

🛴 How is a freestyle scooter different from a regular one?

A freestyle scooter (sometimes called a “trick scooter”; in English, a stunt or pro scooter) is designed for jumps, skatepark riding, and grinding on rails. It differs in every essential respect from an ordinary children’s or urban scooter:

  Freestyle scooter Regular / folding
🔩 Folding Cannot be folded. A rigid connection between the handlebars and fork is essential for withstanding impacts. It folds; the joint is the weakest point.
📏 Handlebar height Fixed, not adjustable. It is selected according to the rider’s height. Telescopically adjustable.
🛞 Wheels Small (usually 110 mm), hard, with an aluminum or plastic core. Larger and softer, more comfortable for long rides.
⚖️ Weight Approximately 3–4 kg. Often lighter, but less durable.
🏁 What is it for Skate park, tricks, jumps, street. City riding and trips.
🧰 Parts Everything can be replaced and upgraded. Usually nothing.

If a child wants to jump, ride at the skatepark and learn tricks, an ordinary scooter won’t hold up, and the first jumps will destroy it. A freestyle scooter is built exactly for this.

👶 From what age is a freestyle scooter suitable?

There is no lower limit. It depends on whether the child wants to learn to jump and can carry a scooter weighing 3–4 kg. In practice, we see even three-year-olds at the skatepark; children usually start around the age of 5–8. For the smallest riders, choose the smallest size (with a total scooter height of around 65–70 cm) and the lightest model possible.

Use age as a guide only. Two ten-year-old children can be 130 and 150 cm tall and need completely different scooters. That’s why it’s selected based on height.

📏 What size freestyle scooter should you choose based on your height?

Two heights are specified for a freestyle scooter, and it’s important not to confuse them:

  • The total height of the scooter is measured from the ground to the top edge of the handlebars. We list it here for complete scooters, and it is used as the selection criterion.
  • Handlebar height is measured on the handlebars alone (from the bottom of the tube to the top edge). That only matters when you’re replacing the handlebars or building your own scooter.

Rule: when a child is standing on the scooter deck, the handlebars should reach between their navel and waist. Lower is uncomfortable and the child hunches over; higher is harder to control and jump. Advanced riders then fine-tune the height to suit their style, and often ride even lower, but to start with, aim for somewhere between your navel and waist.

👤 Rider height 🛴 Overall scooter height (from ground to handlebars)
up to 100 cm 65–69 cm
100–110 cm 69–72 cm
110–120 cm 72–75 cm
120–130 cm 75–77 cm
130–140 cm 77–80 cm
140–150 cm 80–84 cm
150–160 cm 84–88 cm
160–170 cm 88–94 cm
170–180 cm 94–100 cm
over 180 cm 100 cm and above

The table is for guidance, not a hard-and-fast rule: street riders tend to prefer taller scooters than park riders.

💡 How to measure it at home without a scooter

The child stands on a step or a thick book about 5 cm high (the scooter deck is raised by that much). Hold the broom handle horizontally at a height between his navel and waist, and measure the distance from the handle to the floor where the step is standing. The scooter’s overall height will be calculated for you.

🌱 Buy for them to grow into?

A little, but only by one size. Children grow quickly, and the scooter’s height cannot be adjusted, so if your child is between two sizes in the chart, choose the larger one. This is doubly true when you’re buying a scooter as a Christmas gift: there isn’t much riding to be done in winter, and by spring your child will be a few centimeters taller.

But don’t buy a scooter that’s two sizes too big “so it will last longer.” With handlebars that are too high, a child will struggle to learn how to jump, lose interest, and the scooter will end up in the garage. And vice versa: once your child outgrows the scooter, you don’t have to buy a new one. It is enough to replace the handlebars with taller ones.

💰 How much does a freestyle scooter cost, and what do you get for the price?

The price of freestyle scooters mainly reflects the quality of their parts, not the brand sticker. A more expensive scooter has better bearings, sturdier handlebars, a higher-quality headset, and wheels with an aluminum core. These are all parts that are the first to fail on cheap scooters.

💰 Price 👤 Who it's for 🧰 What to expect
up to CZK 2,000 Not recommended for tricks A toy for riding in a straight line. The bearings, handlebars, and headset can’t withstand jumps; it tends to be heavy and often can’t be repaired.
2,000–3,000 CZK Younger beginner (a smaller, lighter child) A proper freestyle scooter from a brand that specializes in scooters. It can withstand the first jumps and falls; the parts can be replaced.
2,500–4,000 CZK Older beginner (11+ years, teenager, adult) Sturdier frame and handlebars for greater weight and higher jumps. A solid foundation you can ride for years and gradually upgrade.
4,000–6,000 CZK Intermediate Lighter and sturdier parts, better wheels and bearings. For children who already skate regularly and are trying more difficult tricks at the skatepark.
CZK 6,000 and up Advanced, competitive rider Premium complete scooters or a custom scooter assembled from parts.

Prices are indicative ranges from our offering as of October 2026.

In practical terms: for a child who is just starting out, the best value for money is in the CZK 2,000–4,000 range, depending on size. They deserve a more expensive scooter only once they ride regularly and you know they’ll stick with it.

✅ What to check before buying

  • 📏 Size according to the table above. It is the most important parameter.
  • ⚖️ Weight. For small children, as light as possible (around 3 kg), so they can lift it when jumping. For older riders, a few hundred extra grams are no problem; strength is more important.
  • 🏋️ Load capacity. Sets usually have a stated load capacity of around 100 kg. When landing from a jump, several times the rider’s weight is exerted on the scooter, so heavier or older riders should choose a higher price range.
  • 🏷️ A brand that makes only scooters. Specialized brands have sturdier parts, and, most importantly, you can get replacement parts for them. With “sporty” brands from supermarket chains, you often can’t even buy a wheel a year later.
  • 🛞 110 mm wheels. Today's standard and the easiest to refill. Smaller 100 mm wheels are found on the smallest and cheapest models, while larger 120 mm wheels are for advanced models.
  • 🧰 Parts replacement option. A proper freestyle scooter is modular: the handlebars, wheels, grips, brake, and bearings can all be replaced. Cheap scooters from hypermarkets often don’t.

⚠️ Parents’ Most Common Mistakes

  • Choosing based on age instead of height. The box says “8+,” the child is 150 cm tall, and the handlebars reach their thighs.
  • Buying a regular folding scooter for tricks. The joint and telescopic handlebars will withstand a few jumps, then loosen or break.
  • The cheapest scooter “for a trial run”. A child learns poorly on the wrong scooter, doesn’t enjoy it, and six months later you’re buying another one.
  • A scooter that’s too big to grow into. One size up, yes; two sizes, no.
  • No inspection after purchase. The new scooter will arrive partially disassembled and must be properly tightened before its first ride. Guide: How to assemble a new freestyle scooter and what to check before your first ride.

🪖 Helmet and protective gear

Consider a helmet an essential part of your child’s scooter, not an accessory. We strongly recommend wearing a helmet at all times, for both children and adults, on the street and at the skatepark. Head injuries are the most common injuries among beginners, and falls are hardest in the skatepark. Choose a helmet with a hard shell (skate style) that also protects the back of your head.

Protective gear for knees, elbows, and wrists is especially recommended for beginners: during the first few months, children learn how to fall, and protective gear can determine whether they get back up and keep riding after a fall.

❓ FAQ

Can a freestyle scooter be folded?

No. The rigid connection between the handlebars and fork is what holds it together on impact. The folding stunt scooter won't last.

Can the handlebars be adjusted for height?

No, the handlebar height is fixed. Once the child grows, the handlebars can be replaced with higher ones. It’s cheaper than a new scooter.

What freestyle scooter should I get for a 130 cm / 10-year-old child?

For a child 130–140 cm tall, the scooter’s total height should be 77–80 cm. If it falls on the boundary, choose the higher one. Age alone is not the deciding factor.

How much does a good freestyle scooter for beginners cost?

For a younger child 2,000–3,000 CZK, for an older beginner 2,500–4,000 CZK. Don’t buy anything under CZK 2,000; it won’t withstand the jumps.

Is a freestyle scooter from Decathlon or Sportisimo better?

In the lower price range, they are similar; the difference lies in spare parts and servicing: with specialist brands, you can still find wheels, handlebars, and bearings even years later. Often not for string markers.

Can the wheels be replaced?

Yes, for every decent freestyle scooter. Wheels, bearings, grips, and brakes are consumable parts that are routinely replaced.
