A freestyle scooter from a chain store or a specialist shop?

21. October

Written by Martin Nogol, Scootshop.cz · Updated on the 14th. 10. 2026

⚡ In a nutshell: the difference isn’t in the store’s logo, but in what happens a year from now.

A scooter from a sporting goods chain, hypermarket, or discount store can be fine to start with, provided it has standard parts (110 mm wheels, 608 bearings, 32 or 35 mm handlebars, an integrated headset) and you can find a replacement wheel for it a year from now. A specialist store will add size selection based on your height, setup before your first ride, and servicing if anything comes loose.

The string makes sense for the youngest children, with a budget under CZK 2,000, and when you don’t know whether the child will stick with it. Once the child is jumping regularly, it’s worth seeing a specialist.

🧰 Standard parts

110 mm wheels, 608 bearings, 32/35 mm handlebars.

If it fits, you can buy a replacement anywhere.

📅 In 1–2 years

That's when you'll know where you bought it. Can I still get a wheel and handlebars?

📏 Selection by height

Size matters more than the brand. Someone must be able to measure it for you.

🛡️ Warranty ≠ wear and tear

Worn wheels and grips are not a defect. It applies to all sellers.

✅ The string is OK

For the youngest children, a budget under CZK 2,000, and uncertainty about whether the child will stick with it.

⚖️ What’s the difference between a scooter from a chain store and one from a specialist shop?

Honestly: you can also buy a decent freestyle scooter from an established brand in a retail chain. The difference isn’t in the checkout price, but in three things: what components the scooter has, what replacement parts you can get for it in a year, and who will advise you and set it up. Typical comparison:

Next to them are “sporty” folding scooters that look like freestyle scooters.

We discuss how a freestyle scooter differs from a folding scooter, including “sports” scooters from hypermarkets, in the article Freestyle vs. ordinary scooter.

🧰 Will I be able to get a replacement wheel for it in a year? Standard parts make all the difference

A freestyle scooter is a modular setup with standardized component dimensions. If you follow them, you can buy a replacement from any scooter shop, from any brand, even five years later:

  • Wheels: 100, 110, or 120 mm (110 is standard), 24 mm wide, 608 bearings with an 8 mm axle.
  • Handlebars: outer diameter 32 mm (standard) or 35 mm (oversized). The clamp and grips are selected accordingly.
  • Compression: IHC, HIC or SCS. Replacement screws and sleeves are available for each.
  • Headset: integrated, with bearings available for purchase separately.
  • Brake: flex fender for a 100 or 110 mm wheel.

Scooters sold under the chain’s own brand do not have to meet these standards; custom designs tend to be cheaper. The result may be that a standard clamp, wheel, or headset does not fit the scooter. Once the model is sold out, the scooter with a worn-down wheel is ready to be thrown away.

💡 A test that takes one minute

Before you pay, try looking for a replacement wheel and handlebars for your scooter in the general categories of wheels or handlebars at any scooter shop.

If you don’t know what diameter or compression to look for because the manufacturer doesn’t specify it, you have your answer.

🔧 Service, setup and advice: what extra does a specialist do?

Size selection. Size is the most important parameter and cannot be adjusted later. Choose based on height, not age: the handlebars should reach between the navel and waist when the child is standing on the deck. Two ten-year-old children can be 130 and 150 cm tall. At a specialist shop, you can put your child on a scooter and see how it fits right away; in a chain store, you only have the age listed on the box. You can find the size chart in the guide How to Choose a Freestyle Scooter.

Settings before the first ride. The new scooter comes partially disassembled and needs to be tightened: first the compression, then the clamp. If it’s not tightened properly, it rattles and damages the headset. A specialist will do it before handing it over; in the chain, you’re on your own. The procedure is explained in the guide How to assemble a new freestyle scooter and what to check before your first ride.

Service after a few weeks. After a month of jumping, the compression or clamp loosens and the handlebars rattle. It’s not a defect; the parts are settling into place. At a specialist’s, it’s a five-minute repair on the spot, along with advice on how to do it at home. Either the complaint is rejected, or nothing.

Warranty. The warranty is the same everywhere; the assessment differs. Material defects (poorly bonded PU on the wheel, faulty weld) become apparent during the first rides; report them as a warranty claim. The procedure is explained in the article How to make a warranty claim. A specialist will recognize the defect, and you won’t have to argue with headquarters.

✅ When is a chain-store scooter okay, and when is it not?

The string makes sense when:

  • You're buying for a younger child (roughly up to 110 cm tall) who is just learning to ride. A lightweight, inexpensive scooter is enough for him, and he’ll replace it in a year anyway.
  • You don’t know whether the child will stay with it. A cheaper scooter is a sensible option. Just keep in mind that once it starts jumping, a second purchase will come.
  • The budget is under CZK 2,000 and is not higher. A scooter from a well-established brand is better than no scooter at all. Choose according to the checklist below.
  • The string has fully implemented brands with standard parts. The only difference is then in the advice and setup, which you can manage at home with the guides.

The string does not make sense when:

  • the child is already jumping, or the rider is older or heavier. A scooter under CZK 2,000 won’t last, so you end up buying twice;
  • a scooter from a chain store can be folded or height-adjusted, even if it’s called “freestyle”. Then it’s not a freestyle scooter.

For exactly what you get at each price point, see the article How much does a freestyle scooter cost, and what do you get for the price?.

📋 What to ask before buying, wherever you shop

Ten questions for the seller or product description. Valid in the chain, on the e-shop, and with us. If you don’t get an answer to most of them, you’re buying blind.

#QuestionCorrect answerWhy it matters
1Can it be folded or adjusted to a vertical position? No.The joint or telescopic section gives way during jumps. If so, it’s not freestyle.
2What is its total height from the ground to the handlebars? The number in cm that corresponds to the child’s height according to the chart. The size cannot be changed later. The age on the box isn’t enough.
3What compression system does it have?IHC, HIC, or SCS.Determines which handlebars, clamp, and fork you buy for it. “I don’t know” or “threaded” is a warning.
4What diameter are the handlebars?32 mm (standard) or 35 mm (oversized). The clamp, grips, and replacement handlebars won’t fit a different diameter.
5Is the headset integrated?Yes.Non-integrated headset cups compress, and the handlebars have permanent play.
6What is the diameter of the wheels, and what type of core do they have?100, 110, or 120 mm, aluminum core. The plastic core deforms on impact.
7Can the wheel be replaced, and what kind of bearings does it have?Yes, 608 bearings.Consumable parts. If they can’t be bought separately, the scooter has to be thrown away after the season.
8What is the load capacity?Around 100 kg (EN 14619 standard).Upon impact, 2–3 times the rider’s body weight is exerted. Low load capacity = designed for riding, not jumping.
9How much does it weigh?Approximately 3–4 kg, closer to 3 kg for a small child.A small child cannot lift a heavy scooter while jumping.
10Will spare parts be available for it in a year?Yes, the parts are standard and can be purchased from other brands.“While the model is available” means that once it sells out, you won’t be able to buy one.

The meaning of each term is explained in the Freestyle Scooter Glossary and the article What Is a Freestyle Scooter Made Of? .

⚠️ The most common mistakes when buying from a retail chain

  • Buying a “sports” folding scooter instead of a freestyle scooter. It looks the same, has small wheels and the word “stunt.” But it has a joint or telescopic handlebars, and they loosen during jumps.
  • Age selection on the box. “8+” doesn’t tell you how high the handlebars reach on the child. Measure the child's height.
  • No tightening required after unpacking. The compression and clamp must be tightened; otherwise, the scooter rattles and damages its headset.
  • Relying on “they have spare parts.” Ask which parts are available and whether parts from other brands will also fit.
  • Wear and tear claims. Worn wheels, grips, and play caused by insufficient tightening are not defects attributable to any seller.

❓ FAQ

Is a freestyle scooter from Decathlon or Sportisimo any good?

It may be, if it is a fixed set with standard parts. Review it using the checklist above. If it can be folded or adjusted, it is not a freestyle scooter.

Can I get replacement parts for a scooter bought at a hypermarket?

With private-label watches, often not, especially after a model sells out. Yes, for scooters with standard parts, from any brand.

Do you repair scooters bought elsewhere at Scootshop?

Yes, no strings attached: tightening, replacement of wheels, bearings, grips or handlebars. Simply come to our store in Pardubice. For scooters with non-standard parts, it only matters whether a replacement part is available.

When is it enough to buy an inexpensive scooter from a chain store?

For the youngest child, who doesn’t jump, when you’re not sure they’ll stick with it, or when your budget is under CZK 2,000. As soon as they start jumping regularly, expect to spend CZK 2,000–4,000 on a freestyle scooter.

Is the warranty different at a specialist store than at a chain store?

The warranty is the same. The difference lies in the assessment: a specialist can distinguish a manufacturing defect from wear and improper tightening.
