Freestyle Scooter for Adults and Tall Riders

21. October

Written by Martin Nogol, Scootshop.cz · Updated on the 14th. 10. 2026

⚡ In short: an adult needs a taller, sturdier, and one-class-better scooter than a child.

For a height of 170–180 cm, look for a scooter with an overall height of 94–100 cm; for heights over 180 cm, look for 100 cm or more.

Complete scooters have a load capacity of around 100 kg, but landings exert 2–3 times the rider’s weight, so heavier riders should choose a higher class with steel handlebars.

A reasonable price for an adult beginner is CZK 2,500–4,000; for regular riding, a mid-range option costs CZK 4,000–6,000. We strongly recommend always wearing a helmet, for adults as well as children.

📏 180 cm = 100+ cm

Overall scooter height for riders over 180 cm.

Children’s sets don’t reach that point.

🏋️ Load capacity approx. 100 kg

On impact, 2–3× body weight is exerted. Heavier riders: higher-grade steel.

💰 CZK 2,500–4,000

Level for an adult beginner. Regular commuting: CZK 4,000–6,000.

🛞 110 mm, 120 for tall models

The standard is 110 mm. Tall street riders sometimes use 120 mm, if they fit.

🪖 Helmets for adults too

We strongly recommend it at all times, both on the street and at the skatepark. Concrete doesn’t discriminate by age.

👤 Who is this guide for?

Freestyle scootering is not just a children's sport. Three groups of adults come to the store, and each has slightly different needs:

  • Adult beginner. He wants to learn to jump and ride at the skate park. Usually 20–35 years old, 170–190 cm tall, 70–95 kg. They need a scooter that can withstand the clumsy first landings of an adult body.
  • A parent who wants to ride with their children. They don’t want to stand by the skatepark fence; they want to ride with their child. It doesn’t need a racing setup, but it does need the right size and stiffness. A children's scooter isn't enough for him.
  • Tall rider, 180 cm and above. A teenager or adult who doesn’t fit standard uniform sizes. It mainly addresses handlebar height and deck length.

The same rules as for children apply to all three (height, not age), just with different numbers. You can find the basics in the guide How to Choose a Freestyle Scooter; here are the differences for adults.

📏 What size freestyle scooter is right for an adult?

The rule is the same as for children: when you stand on the board, the handlebars should reach somewhere between your navel and waist. It is selected based on the overall height of the scooter (from the ground to the top edge of the handlebars), which we list for each complete scooter.

👤 Rider height🛴 Total scooter height📝 Note
160–170 cm88–94 cmMost setups for older beginners and mid-range models.
170–180 cm94–100 cmMost common adult size. Look for sets marked for adults or “L”.
180 cm and above100 cm and aboveThe tallest complete setups, or a setup with the handlebars replaced with taller ones, or a custom setup.

At 190 cm and above, you often won’t fit into standard sets. The solution is simple: buy the complete scooter in the largest size and immediately replace the handlebars with taller ones, or have a custom scooter built. What does it involve? The article Complete scooter or custom scooter? explains.. The handlebars can be shortened, but not lengthened, so if in doubt, choose the larger size.

Two parameters that do not matter for children but do for adults:

  • Handlebar width: roughly shoulder-width. For an adult with broad shoulders, the children's handlebars are too narrow, making the scooter harder to control.
  • Board length and width: with boot sizes 43–46, you need a longer and wider board, around 5 inches (12.7 cm) or more. The short children's board does not leave room for both of an adult's feet.

🏋️ What is the weight capacity of a freestyle scooter, and what if I weigh more?

Sets usually have a stated load capacity of around 100 kg. This also complies with the European standard for scooters, EN 14619, which is based on a user weighing 20–100 kg. But the number applies to both parking and driving. When landing from a jump, the scooter is subjected to 2–3 times the rider’s weight, so a 90 kg rider landing from a ramp puts a load of 180–270 kg on the scooter. This determines how much stress the handlebars, fork, and plate welds can withstand.

What does this mean for the selection:

  • Up to 75 kg: any kit for older beginners (CZK 2,500–4,000) and above.
  • 75–95 kg: mid-range (CZK 4,000–6,000), steel handlebars, sturdier deck. Aluminum handlebars are lighter, but they flex more and crack sooner under heavier riders.
  • Over 95 kg: Pro-level complete ($6,000 CZK and up) or a custom build focused on strength: steel handlebars, SCS compression (the strongest), a wider deck, and wheels with a solid aluminum core. Above 100 kg, you’re outside the standard’s range, so choose street-oriented parts designed to withstand hard impacts.

💡 Don’t worry about the scooter’s weight for adults

Children need the lightest possible scooter because they have to lift it when jumping. An adult weighing 80 kg won’t notice the difference between 3.5 and 4.2 kg, but they will notice the difference in firmness. For adults, always prioritize strength over weight.

Wheels: standard size is 110 mm, width 24 mm. Tall street riders sometimes choose 120 mm (for more speed and stability), but whether they fit a particular deck and fork always depends on the specific product. 120 mm wheels are hardly ever used at skateparks because of their weight.

💰 How much does a freestyle scooter for an adult cost, and which one should you choose?

An adult beginner is in a different situation from a child: they won’t grow, so a scooter will last them for years, but they weigh twice as much, so a cheap scooter won’t last. That's why the level starts higher:

💰 Price range👤 Who it's for🧰 What to expect
up to CZK 2,500Not recommended for adultsScooters for younger children. Low, short board, designed for 30 kg.
CZK 2,500–4,000Adult beginner, parent for occasional ridingComplete sets for older beginners in adult sizes. It will last through the first season of learning; the parts are standard and can be replaced.
4,000–6,000 CZKAn adult who wants to ride regularly; heavier ridersMid-range: sturdier deck and fork, steel handlebars, better bearings and wheels. Our most common recommendations for adults.
6,000 CZK and upAdvanced riders, riders over 95 kg, over 190 cm tallPro-level complete setups or custom-made options.

Prices are indicative ranges from our offerings as of October 2026.

If you’re not sure what to go for: for most adults, the best choice is the mid-range option (CZK 4,000–6,000). The main difference from the beginner level is its sturdiness, which an adult will appreciate from day one, and there’s no need to replace the scooter a year later.

🪖 Does an adult have to wear a helmet on a freestyle scooter?

A helmet is strongly recommended at all times, for children and adults alike, on the street and at the skatepark. Head injuries are the most common injury among beginners, regardless of age.

An adult beginner falls just as often as a child, only from greater heights and with more weight. Choose a helmet with a skate-style hard shell that complies with the EN 1078 standard. Wrist and knee guards are also useful for the first few months; adults most often injure their wrists when they fall. You can find the helmet size based on head circumference in the size charts.

⚠️ Most common mistakes made by adult beginners

  • Buying a children’s scooter “to try it out.” Low handlebars (some people search for “handlebars”), short deck, frame rated for 30 kg. An adult won’t learn anything on it and will bend it on the first major impact.
  • The cheapest full set because you’re not sure whether you’ll stick with it. For CZK 2,000, you get a scooter that an 85 kg person will destroy in a month. If you’re unsure, choose the 2,500–4,000 CZK range and the correct size. It can also be resold or transferred to a child.
  • Selection based on weight rather than strength. A lightweight park scooter with aluminum handlebars is a poor choice for a 90 kg rider.
  • Handlebars below the navel because higher ones “were out of stock”. In an adult, this manifests as back pain after the first hour. Replace the handlebars immediately.
  • Folding scooter. The same applies as with children: joints cannot withstand jumping, and even less so in adults.
  • No helmet, because “I don’t have to.” You don’t have to. But the concrete in the skatepark doesn’t care about that.

❓ FAQ

Are there freestyle scooters for adults?

Yes. Most brands offer complete sets in sizes for riders 170–190 cm tall, and advanced sets are designed for adults. The overall height of the scooter and its price range matter, not the label “for adults”.

Which freestyle scooter is right for a rider who is 180 cm tall?

Overall scooter height 100 cm or more, with the handlebars between your navel and waist when standing on the deck. At 190 cm and above, expect to replace the handlebars with taller ones or get a custom scooter.

Can a freestyle scooter support 100 kg?

The sets have a load capacity of around 100 kg. During jumps, however, your weight is multiplied by 2–3, so if you weigh over 95 kg, choose a pro complete scooter or a custom build with steel handlebars and a sturdy deck.

How much does a freestyle scooter for an adult cost?

Beginner: CZK 2,500–4,000, regular riding: CZK 4,000–6,000, advanced and heavier riders: CZK 6,000 and up. Under CZK 2,500, you'll mostly find children's scooters.

Is a freestyle scooter suitable for an adult beginner?

Yes. An adult can learn the basics (riding, braking, bunny hops, and the first ramp) in a few weeks. Compared to a child, they only need a taller, sturdier scooter and more patience with falls.

Does an adult have to wear a helmet on a scooter?

We strongly recommend it at all times, both on the street and at the skatepark. Head injuries are the most common injury among beginners, regardless of age.
